Description:

The "Write Stuff" provides the therapist and educator with a thorough understanding of hand development and its role in the promotion of fine motor skills and handwriting. Participants will learn specific therapeutic fine motor activities designed for the classroom that support curriculum goals. These activities facilitate an integrated therapy approach, thus following IDEA guidelines for occupational therapy service delivery. The "Write Stuff" offers effective, proven strategies for children with developmental delays and fine motor delays.

Objectives:

Identify foundational hand skills.

Recognize specific deficits in hand skill development.

Define and identify the "Write Stuff": components for developing good handwriting.

Problem solve (through a case study) hand delays and how to address them in an integrated classroom approach.

Identify therapeutic and non-therapeutic toys for hand development (scavenger hunt).

Recognize pre-writing skills and age appropriateness for each skill.

Identify recent technology developments to address handwriting.

Identify "poor" handwriting and differentiate various etiologies behind poor handwriting.
